Episode 119: Dissecting Owl Pellets To Harvest Cool Bones

Katie drags Loni into her own, weird little world this week while they dissect owl pellets. They have a great time talking about what owl pellets are, how to prepare and dissect them, and why on earth they are doing science stuff on an arts podcast. Other highlights of this episode… a new jingle courtesy of Katie’s husband, discussion regarding this weird clown bullshit, and an update on Doo-Dah’s rooster foot digestion.

To check out the Pintrest board for this episode and see the sort of things one can make with rodent bones and get some tips about all things owl pellet click here.

Carolina Biological Supply has a great article “All About Owl Pellets” we suggest you read.

One of our favorite places for late night drunk shopping and general “pick-me-up” impulse purchases is American Science and Surplus. They are super rad. You can get the dental picks The Gals used to dissect owl pellets with on their site for a mere $3.73.

And although you can find owl pellets for sale almost anywhere on the interwebz (EBay and Amazon are great bets as well as the Carolina Biological Supply site we listed above and a bajillion other places) we love America Science and Surplus so we are going to link the ones they have on their site here.

Here are some of the pictures The Gals took while recording:

Katie continued dissecting pellets during the week… here are some of her more impressive treasures and the pile of bones she ended up with.

This is what the bones all looked like after being soaked in mild soapy water and rinsed and then put into their peroxide/water bath for bleaching.

And here are all of Katie pretties organized by type of bone. The skulls are organized by condition. For the record, after looking at all the charts we found, we are almost 100% positive that all of these bones belong to big brown rats. SO much prettier without the rest of the rat on them, aren’t they?
