Episode 144: Tips For Sewing With Knits

Katie and Loni are ecstatic to share what they have learned (through trial and error) about sewing with knits this week. This is the first in what will be a three parter about upcycling knit clothing. In this first installment hear about why The Gals love knits, why they are challenging to sew with, and how you can avoid the mistakes they made as beginners.

We don’t have a Pintrest board for this yet but will have one ready next week when the second part of this three parter is up for you. Until then feel free to have a look around at all of the boards we have complied for you here.

These are our three favorite indie pattern makers for knit clothing.
They are all easy to follow and they all have plus sizes that actually fit!

This is an excellent video filled with tips about sewing with knits. Pay attention to the advice about needle type and take notes!

We looked high and low for a good video about sewing with a walking foot. This gives you the basics… seriously, this makes sewing with knits on a regular machine a dream! (For some reason this isn’t showing the right video… you will need to click the upper left corner and choose the 4th video in the series to see the one we want you to.)

Here we have an excellent twin needle tutorial! Twin needles finish your garments with a professional look that will make people have a hard time believe you didn’t buy them in a store.

Few things will give you fits of rage like learning to put a neckband on a knit shirt. This is the best tutorial we have found and Katie swears by this method.

The blind hem foot will also help you with creating beautifully finished garments. Here we have a tutorial for use with a serger and below that, one for use on a regular machine.

We hope these tips have you excited to experiment with knits and maybe have inspired you to participate in our upcoming “upcycling” challenge.
