You know what really gives us wood around here? Art supplies of any kind… especially art supplies with multiple uses and endless possibilities… and even more so when they are sustainable and just plain awesome products. That is why we are talking about balsa wood today. After Katie got over making “wood” (boner) jokes this turned out to be a very informative episode.
Katie referenced an article that she wrote for her personal art blog four years ago and although she and Sharon pretty much covered everything she wrote there, we thought you might enjoy reading it for more specifics on how she used the balsa wood in the projects we talked about https://katiecahillart.wordpress.com//?s=balsa+wood&search=Go.
Speaking of projects! Here are the images promised to you during the episode…
This piece is an old favorite one that Katie sold a couple of years ago. The flooring, bookshelf, and chair are all made of balsa wood as well as the behind the scenes structural elements in the back of the shadowbox (the floors had to be framed in to elevate them to the same level as the lower edge of the frame).
This is the display case that Katie made for her husband’s barbershop. The case itself is actually constructed of foam core board and painted but the actual signage on the display is carved from a solid piece of balsa wood and then attached to the foam core board.
If you want to know a little more about balsa wood and the tree that produces it check out this Wise Geek article (Katie used it as reference in the article from her other blog), we found it to be very informative http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-balsa-wood.htm.
